(June 18th, 2011).- This word, which is not contained in the dictionary
of the RAE, has been chosen in the E day as the most beautiful word of
our language. It was the most voted word in the Internet and proposed by
the Mexican actor Gael García Bernal.
Querétaro is a word of Otomi
origin meaning "island of the blue salamanders," although another
version says it is a voice of Purépecha origin, ethnicity that also
lived in central Mexico, meaning "place of reptiles."
Over 33,000 people voted online until yesterday
their favorite word in Spanish. The winner was announced by the director
of the Instituto Cervantes, Carmen Caffarel, flanked by Ana Maria
Matute, last winner of the greatest prize of our literature, the
Cervantes Award, and the Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde.
Spanish
speakers from all over the world voted for the most beautiful word in
the E day and dedicated to the language of Cervantes a holiday, which
was celebrated with 500 events in 78 cities around the globe with a
playful shower of words. "A great part of the participants surely voted
from Mexico and were able to elevate the name of the Mexican state of
Querétaro as the most beautiful word in our language over voices such as dream (sueño), emotion (emoción), flamenco, bat (murciélago), dawn
(alborada), joy (alegría), peace (paz) or word (palabra).
"We
want to consolidate this party as that of those who speak Spanish, so
each year we will have a day when we feel united by a common language
and sharing the vast richness of Spanish culture," said the director of
the Instituto Cervantes.

(February 18, 2008).- Spanish will be the second language of economic exchange in the world in the next decade and could exceed the number of English native speakers, according to a study presented in Madrid by Fundación Telefónica.
According to the study Spanish Economy. An introduction, this language multiplies by two to three times the market share of Spanish exports in the whole of Spanish-speaking countries, “a multiplier factor even greater than English in the Anglo-Saxon countries”.
This study of Fundación Telefónica, the first of 10 volumes that will be presented soon on the value of Spanish, also stresses that this language “multiplies by almost 2.5 the share of migrants coming from Spanish speaking countries”, which reduces the costs of integration.

(June 16, 2011).- Social media — with its emphasis on connecting communities — is helping the growth of Spanish-language media, said a panel of broadcasting executives at the NAHJ Newsmaker Luncheon on Thursday.
There are currently 400 Spanish-language newspapers and magazines in print, and that number is growing, said the panelists at “A View from the Top: The Impact of Spanish-language News Media.”
When asked by the moderator if that trend would continue, Monica Lozano, CEO at Impremedia, answered, “I’m optimistic… the Spanish language will persevere over time.”
Lozano, who said her company would be expanding and hiring, said it is important to have local talent in order to produce rich content. But it is also important to seek talent from all over.
Eduardo Zavala, president of ZGS Group, said that it is crucial to be committed to the audience that news organizations serve.

(July 1, 2011). - Mario Vargas Llosa’s native city, Arequipa, will launch a cultural tourism route that will include the manor house where the 2010 Nobel Literature laureate was born, a library named after him, as well as other places that enable to know more about "the White City".
According to Arequipa’s regional manager of Foreign Trade and Tourism Rocío Cervantes, the increasing cultural movement towards the figure of the Peruvian writer leads to offer his fans a cultural tourism route that enables to know the place where he was born and where he learned his first customs.
The manor house where the author of The Dream of the Celt was born was recently declared cultural heritage of the country and will become a traditional and high-tech museum to receive its visitors next year.
“Peru is for me Arequipa, where I was born but never lived, a city that my mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles taught me to know through their memories and yearnings, because my entire family tribe, as Arequipa people tend to do, always carried the White City with them in their wandering existence,” said Vargas Llosa during his lecture delivered in Stockholm.
“Thanks to our prizewinner, we can prepare a cultural route together with a literary route; a tour of important figures (…) It’s a goal that we’ll achieve next year. We’ll begin with Mario Vargas Llosa but there will also be other routes of important figures who were born here,” Cervantes told Andina.
